You, the Living

Far from bringing us a conventional, plot-driven film, Andersson shares his vision of ‘the living’ in a succession of loosely connected vignettes. The shots are wide, the takes long, the palette muted and the camera static. Brilliantly observed tragic and comic moments play out to the corny strains of a marching band, or the thunderclaps of an apocalyptic storm, or both. Detached from their context, these sketches are made surreal and touching. Some are laugh out loud funny. Watching them feels a bit like observing ants under a magnifying glass, or cells in a petri dish. This perspective becomes meaningful in the final shot: a genius piece of filmmaking no movie fan should miss.
